Well, to be safe, we need to cancel class Thursday, January 22 as well. The note from Bill Finger, Middlebury Town Manager, is below. There is a chance the formal clean-up will be done by Thursday afternoon, BUT it is likely that we will need to give our own mats a good scrubbing before we train. More details to follow, but for now, with sincere apologies, no class on Thursday January 22.
FROM BILL FINGER: Last weekend Teen Center staff and volunteers had planned to paint the floor in the center. When the building on Monday morning we found that they had rented an industrial grinder to grind the paint off the floor. The grinding operation produced a large amount of dust that coated surfaces in the Teen Center and adjacent Martial Arts room. Since the grinding went through several layers of paint to bare concrete we were concerned about the presence of lead in the dust. We had samples taken from occupied areas of the basement and tested by ATC Associates of Williston. The tests came back positive, exceeding the “clearance standard” in the Teen Center, adjacent room and hallway. The Senior Center was not affected and there is no evidence that the dust penetrated the gym upstairs. The Teen Center and martial Arts room are currently closed indefinitely until clean up is complete.
We are obtaining quotes from lead abatement firms to clean up the mess and get back in operation. The Vermont Health Department will issue permits necessary for abatement.
The testing cost $950.00. The abatement cost is unknown at this writing.
